At the centre of the regeneration of Dalston will
be the largest new public space to be created in
the area for over 100 years – Dalston Square.
The new square will be longer than a football
pitch and will include trees, paving and planting.
The detailed plans for each part of the square
have not been finalised and we welcome public
feedback.
The square will provide:
- A home to the new London Overground
Station, placing Dalston firmly on the London
Underground Map, via the East London Line
extension
- Infrastructure to enable the square to host
outdoor events such as open-air films and
concerts
- New retail and commercial opportunities,
creating a lively square where people can shop,
eat and relax in a friendly atmosphere
- A new children’s play area
- A sensory garden and peaceful garden area
- A water feature, creating a major new public art
piece for Dalston and a new focal point for the
community
- A memorial to the victims of the New Cross Fire
tragedy
- The Plot: A 10 x 10 metre area designated for
public art. The plot will be linked to an art
strategy and cultural programme for the area
being developed by Hackney Council
- £50,000 of funding for a public arts strategy.
The money will help to contribute towards
a vibrant and innovative cultural programme
that involves local people and local arts
organisations
Over the next few months landscape architects
will be developing detailed plans for the new
square. They will be looking at the zones; civic
space; entertainment space; children’s play
area; and green space incorporating ideas from
other successful schemes. |
